Los Angeles is converting the momentum from its successful run as a FIFA World Cup 2026 host city into a long-term strategy to solidify its status as a premier global sports destination. The city hosted eight matches, attracting more than 560,000 spectators, and is now focusing on two marquee events: Super Bowl LXI in 2027 and the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2028.

Adam Burke, President and CEO of Los Angeles Tourism, underscored the tournament's significance in driving tourism and economic growth. "The tournament demonstrated the power of major sporting events to drive tourism, create economic opportunities, and bring the global community together," Burke said. The World Cup events, including the FIFA Fan Festival and numerous community activities, generated a projected $892 million in economic impact for Los Angeles County.

Collaborative success and local business impact

The tournament's success was a collaborative effort involving public agencies, venue operators, and local businesses. Ilysha Buss, Director of Marketing and Communications at The Original Farmers Market, highlighted the event's reach. "This opportunity delivered tremendous visibility and opportunity for our small and family-owned businesses," Buss noted. The influx of international visitors provided a significant boost to the city's hospitality and retail sectors, reinforcing the value of major events for the local economy.

Looking ahead, Los Angeles will host the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, featuring 51 sports and over 800 events. The city plans to use existing venues, making it the first Summer Olympics since 1948 to avoid building new permanent infrastructure. The LA28 Games will also introduce a "car-free" model, leveraging significant transportation improvements to enhance mobility for athletes and spectators alike.

Beyond sports, Los Angeles is experiencing a cultural renaissance with new attractions such as the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art and the California Science Centre's Samuel Oschin Air and Space Centre. These developments, alongside a thriving culinary scene, position Los Angeles as an emerging capital of culture and entertainment, further appealing to leisure and business travelers.

For travel professionals, the city's aggressive pursuit of major events signals sustained demand for flights, hotel rooms, and ground transportation. Airlines and hoteliers should monitor capacity plans, as the 2028 Olympics are expected to draw record numbers of international visitors. The city's investment in transit infrastructure, including expanded rail and bus networks, will also benefit corporate and MICE travelers.

Los Angeles Tourism is actively marketing the destination to international markets, leveraging the World Cup's global reach to attract visitors from Europe, Asia, and Latin America. The city's diverse neighborhoods and world-class attractions provide ample opportunities for tour operators to craft unique itineraries.

As the city prepares for a busy calendar of events, stakeholders across the travel industry—from airline codeshares to hotel expansions—are positioning themselves to capitalize on the influx of visitors. The ripple effects are expected to extend beyond the event dates, with lasting benefits for the region's tourism economy.

With the Super Bowl and Olympics on the horizon, Los Angeles is not just hosting events—it is building a legacy that will define its tourism landscape for years to come.
