Marriott International has crossed a significant milestone in its Asia Pacific expansion with the opening of La Résidence Phou Vao, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa in Luang Prabang, Laos. The property is the group's 800th in the region excluding China and marks its first foray into the Lao market.
Set on a hilltop overlooking the UNESCO World Heritage town, the 36-suite resort occupies three acres of tropical gardens. It combines traditional Lao design elements with French art de vivre, offering a retreat that taps into one of Southeast Asia's most culturally rich destinations.
Long known as one of Luang Prabang's distinctive hillside retreats, La Résidence Phou Vao has now been integrated into The Luxury Collection portfolio. The original architecture, tropical gardens and signature hilltop swimming pool have been preserved, while interiors, dining concepts and guest experiences have been refreshed to align with the brand's standards.
Rajeev Menon, President, Asia Pacific excluding China, Marriott International, said: "Laos represents an exciting new chapter for us, and the opening of La Résidence Phou Vao, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Luang Prabang underscores Marriott's commitment to thoughtfully expanding our presence in places that are rich in culture and character."
Bruce Rohr, Vice President and Global Brand Leader of The Luxury Collection, highlighted the resort's connection to its destination: "From its preserved hilltop setting heritage and craftsmanship, to experiences rooted in Lao culture and craft, the resort invites global explorers to discover Luang Prabang in a way that is both deeply authentic and entirely its own."
Hilltop retreat overlooking Luang Prabang
Located on Phou Vao hill, the resort offers views of Luang Prabang and the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers. It is approximately two kilometres from the old town, providing convenient access to cultural attractions including the Royal Palace Museum, Wat Xieng Thong and Mount Phou Si.
The 36 suites feature rosewood accents, handwoven textiles and locally inspired design elements. Selected categories offer separate living areas and private terraces, while bathrooms include terrazzo bathtubs, twin vanities and rain showers. Guests can choose from Garden Heritage, Mountain View and Phou Si Temple Suites.
French dining with Lao influences
The resort's culinary programme centres on La Brasserie de la Résidence, which serves contemporary French cuisine with a Lao influence. The menu features seasonal produce, garden herbs and ingredients sourced from the surrounding region. The adjoining bar offers signature cocktails made with premium local spirits. Other dining experiences include a Lao tasting menu showcasing regional flavours and private dining in the garden of Villa des Arts, a preserved colonial residence five minutes from the resort.
Weekend breakfast experiences also highlight local food traditions, with an artisan preparing Nem Kao, a traditional steamed rice crepe also known as Banh Cuon, on the Brasserie terrace.
Wellness inspired by Lao traditions
The Mekong Spa offers treatments inspired by traditional Lao healing practices. Its signature experiences include a ritual featuring Hmong indigo compresses and the restorative Sip Sen Lao massage. Additional facilities include a sauna, relaxation lounge and a 13-metre freshwater infinity pool overlooking the surrounding mountains. Guests can also use the fitness centre or take part in a morning gong meditation ritual.
Cultural experiences beyond the resort
The resort offers curated excursions to explore Luang Prabang's cultural and natural attractions. Experiences include sunset cruises along the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, boat trips to the Pak Ou Caves, home to thousands of Buddha images, and visits to the Kuang Si Waterfalls. Guests can also arrange encounters with elephants at Manifa Sanctuary or participate in a traditional Baci blessing ceremony, a Lao ritual associated with welcome and good fortune.
The Laos debut adds to Marriott's growing footprint in Southeast Asia, where the group has been expanding its luxury and lifestyle portfolios. The opening also aligns with broader trends in the region, as hoteliers increasingly target secondary destinations with cultural depth. For travel professionals, the property offers a new option for clients seeking authentic experiences in a UNESCO-listed setting.
