The Port of Dover has taken a notable step in crew welfare with the opening of a dedicated lounge at its Cruise Terminal 2, developed in partnership with the international maritime charity Stella Maris. The facility, inaugurated on Friday, is designed to give cruise ship crew members a quiet, comfortable space to relax, connect with family, and access support services during port calls.

Funded by Stella Maris, the lounge is the first of its kind within a cruise terminal and can accommodate around 25 people. Amenities include free WiFi, refreshments, a television, a pool table, and a dartboard. More importantly, Stella Maris port chaplains will be on hand to offer practical, pastoral, and spiritual support to crew members, many of whom spend months at sea away from home.

A growing focus on crew wellbeing

The initiative reflects a broader industry trend toward improving crew welfare, as cruise lines and ports recognize the critical role that crew play in delivering the passenger experience. Peter Wright, Head of Cruise at the Port of Dover, emphasized the port's commitment to exceptional customer service, particularly for crew members. "Thank you to Stella Maris for providing this wonderful lounge, giving the crew easy access to their own space that they can use for socialising, relaxing, and connecting with their loved ones," he said.

Tim Hill, CEO and National Director of Stella Maris UK, described the facility as an "oasis" for crew members visiting Dover, offering a welcoming environment where they can feel at home. The opening ceremony included a ribbon cutting and an official blessing by Bishop Paul Hendricks, Auxiliary Bishop for the Kent Area.

Stella Maris is renowned for its global support of seafarers, fishers, and their families, operating the largest ship-visiting network in the world. The charity's presence at Dover adds a layer of pastoral care that complements the port's operational services.

For cruise lines calling at Dover, the lounge provides a tangible benefit for their crew, potentially improving morale and retention. It also aligns with the industry's increasing attention to crew mental health and wellbeing, a topic that has gained prominence in recent years.

The Port of Dover is a key gateway for cruise traffic, with itineraries often including Northern Europe, the Baltic, and transatlantic crossings. The new lounge is expected to be used by crew from a variety of lines, including P&O Cruises, Cunard, and others that regularly visit the port.

This development comes as the cruise industry continues to recover and expand, with ports investing in infrastructure to accommodate larger vessels and enhance the passenger experience. Crew facilities are an often-overlooked aspect of port operations, but initiatives like this one highlight the importance of supporting the people who make cruise holidays possible.

For travel professionals, the lounge underscores the value of crew welfare as a differentiator in the competitive cruise market. As lines and ports compete for the best crew, amenities like this can help attract and retain talent, ultimately benefiting the entire travel ecosystem.

The Port of Dover's collaboration with Stella Maris sets a precedent that other cruise ports may follow, potentially leading to a network of crew lounges across key destinations. For now, Dover stands out as a pioneer in this area, offering a model that balances operational efficiency with genuine care for seafarers.
