The 24th Sichuan Guangwu Mountain International Red Leaf Festival is set to run from 1 October to 18 November at the Guangwu Mountain Tourism Area in Bazhong, Sichuan Province. The event, a cornerstone of China's autumn travel calendar, draws international visitors to witness the transformation of 680 square kilometres of forest into a vivid display of red, gold, and orange.

Guangwu Mountain, with 97% forest coverage, is often described as Asia's longest natural red carpet. The festival attracts backpackers, photographers, and nature-focused travellers, and this year's edition introduces several enhancements designed to deepen the visitor experience.

New attractions and infrastructure

Among the notable additions is the Yanziling Loop Boardwalk, which opened in May 2026. The cliff-side walkway offers panoramic views with clouds below and foliage alongside, providing a new perspective on the mountain's autumn colours.

Thrill-seekers can also try the 1,888-metre Red Leaf Coaster, which winds through the forest, and a glass water slide that holds a Guinness World Record. The festival's signature evening show, New Dream of Guangwu Mountain, combines light and visual technology with local folklore, creating an immersive nighttime spectacle.

Infrastructure improvements include the Micang Avenue, an 85-kilometre route that connects key scenic spots, reducing travel time and offering scenic drives. The route will also host the China Micang Avenue International Road Cycling Race, part of a broader programme of cultural and sports events.

With special offers at 31 attractions and 18 cultural venues, the festival aims to attract both domestic and international visitors. The region's autumn appeal is part of a wider trend in China, as destinations like Wuhan's autumn calendar demonstrates, with 279 events designed to boost tourism and consumption.

For travel professionals, the festival underscores the growing importance of seasonal nature-based tourism in China. The combination of new infrastructure, adventure activities, and cultural programming positions Guangwu Mountain as a compelling option for autumn itineraries, particularly for agents and operators targeting the Asia-Pacific market.

Similar autumn-focused initiatives are emerging across the globe, from Pure Michigan's 20th-anniversary push to Sussex's heritage events, indicating a broader industry shift toward seasonal storytelling and experience-based travel.

The festival also aligns with the growing trend of wellness and nature retreats, as seen in Aman's autumn lineup, which spans Dolomites hikes to Ise-Shima wellness. For tour operators, Guangwu Mountain offers a distinct product that combines scenic beauty with active experiences, appealing to a wide demographic.

As the travel industry continues to recover and evolve, events like the Red Leaf Festival demonstrate the value of investing in destination infrastructure and programming. The addition of the Micang Avenue and the new boardwalk are examples of how destinations can enhance accessibility while preserving natural appeal.

For hoteliers and hospitality providers in the Bazhong area, the festival period is a key revenue driver, with occupancy typically peaking during the autumn weeks. The extended run from October to mid-November allows for staggered visitor flows, reducing pressure on local services.

The festival's international marketing efforts, including special offers and media outreach, aim to attract visitors from across Asia and beyond. With its combination of natural beauty, cultural events, and modern amenities, Guangwu Mountain is well-positioned to become a flagship autumn destination in China.
