UAE-based business travel platform Tumodo has launched Theo, a conversational AI analyst designed to streamline travel spend management. As global business travel expenditure is projected to hit $1.69 trillion by 2026, the tool addresses a persistent pain point: manual reporting processes that only a third of companies have automated.

Theo integrates with Tumodo's existing analytics suite, enabling travel managers and finance teams to query travel expenses in natural language. Responses come in text, charts, or tables, offering real-time insights into spending patterns, policy violations, and cost breakdowns by department and service type. The tool also benchmarks a company's travel programme against similar businesses on the platform, helping firms adapt their policies based on comparative data.

Read-only design for data security

Unlike some AI assistants that can take action, Theo operates in a read-only mode, ensuring it cannot book or alter travel plans. It also respects user permissions, remaining silent if it cannot verify access rights. This design is intended to reassure corporate clients concerned about data integrity and unauthorized changes.

Tumodo's internal tests suggest that acting on Theo's recommendations could lead to savings of 3-10% in travel budgets. For a company spending $10 million annually on travel, that translates to $300,000 to $1 million in potential savings.

“Before, going from a question like ‘how much are we spending on hotels this quarter’ to an actual number meant an export, a set of filters, and a pivot table. Now it’s one message in a chat,” said Vladimir Kokorin, founder of Tumodo.

Theo is the first in a series of AI tools Tumodo plans to release, including AI-assisted booking and “super-agents” for routine tasks. This initiative marks a significant step in Tumodo's strategy to leverage AI for comprehensive travel management solutions.

The launch comes as corporate travel technology vendors race to integrate generative AI into their platforms. Competitors like SAP Concur and Amadeus have also introduced AI-powered analytics, but Tumodo's conversational approach aims to lower the barrier for finance teams that lack dedicated data analysts.

For travel managers, the ability to ask questions like “how much did we spend on flights to Singapore last quarter?” and receive an instant, visualized answer could reduce the time spent on reporting by hours each week. That efficiency is particularly valuable for mid-sized enterprises that may not have a dedicated travel analytics team.

Tumodo, which operates primarily in the Middle East and Europe, has been expanding its corporate client base. The platform already offers booking, expense management, and policy enforcement, and Theo adds a layer of intelligence that could differentiate it in a crowded market.

Industry observers note that AI-driven spend management is becoming a key differentiator for travel management companies (TMCs) and tech vendors. As UK travel spending trends show, corporate travel is sensitive to economic shifts, making cost control a top priority for finance leaders.

Tumodo's move also aligns with broader trends in loyalty and personalization, where AI is used to tailor offerings and improve efficiency. While Theo is currently focused on analytics, future AI tools could automate booking processes, further reducing manual workload.

For travel agents and TMCs, the rise of AI analysts like Theo may shift their role from data crunching to strategic advisory. As new airline routes open up, the ability to quickly analyze spend across destinations becomes even more valuable.

Tumodo's Theo is now available to its corporate clients, with a broader rollout expected later this year. The company plans to showcase the tool at upcoming industry events, including the Business Travel Show in London.
