Digital travel platform Agoda has formalised a partnership with the Kaohsiung City Government through a Memorandum of Understanding, aiming to raise the southern Taiwanese port city's profile among international travellers. The collaboration will combine Agoda's global distribution reach and digital marketing capabilities with Kaohsiung's cultural and event-led tourism assets.

Kaohsiung, Taiwan's largest port city and a key gateway to the south, has been steadily diversifying its appeal beyond traditional industrial and transit roles. The city's harbourfront redevelopment, contemporary arts venues, and a growing calendar of large-scale concerts have made it increasingly attractive to regional and long-haul visitors. Agoda's internal search data underscores this momentum: travel searches from Southeast Asian markets for Kaohsiung have climbed 65% compared with the previous year, while European-origin searches are also showing notable growth.

Strategic alignment for destination growth

Jun Dong, Agoda's Vice President of Supply, framed the partnership as a response to shifting traveller preferences. "Kaohsiung's harbour views, thriving arts scene, and booming concert economy make it a city that today's travellers are eager to explore," he said. "Working with the city government allows us to connect these experiences with a global audience more effectively."

The MOU outlines a multi-pronged approach. Co-branded marketing campaigns will promote Kaohsiung across Agoda's platforms, targeting key source markets in Asia and Europe. The two parties will also exchange market insights, with Agoda providing data-driven analysis on traveller behaviour and demand patterns to help the city refine its tourism strategies. In addition, digital training workshops will be offered to local tourism stakeholders, aiming to strengthen their online visibility and booking capabilities.

Kaohsiung's Deputy Mayor, Lin Chin-Rong, welcomed the agreement, noting that the city is "ready for the global stage" with its international-calibre events and unique cultural offerings. The collaboration will also debut the first Taiwan edition of Agoda Dialogues, a filmed conversation with the Mayor of Kaohsiung, scheduled for release in October 2026. This content series is designed to offer travellers an insider perspective on the destination.

The partnership arrives as Taiwan's tourism sector looks to diversify beyond the capital, Taipei. Kaohsiung's port location, combined with its expanding MICE infrastructure and cultural venues, positions it as a contender for regional events and leisure travel. Agoda's broader push into destination marketing is also evident in other initiatives, such as its recent sleep tourism campaign and its StayMiles hotel rewards platform with China Airlines.

For travel professionals, the Kaohsiung agreement signals a growing trend of OTA–destination partnerships that go beyond simple promotion. By integrating data sharing and training, such collaborations aim to build long-term capacity rather than short-term spikes. Agoda's regional data, including its repeat visitor rankings, suggests that destinations like Kaohsiung can benefit from repeat visitation if they offer compelling experiences and convenient booking options.

As more travellers seek regional experiences beyond Taiwan's traditional urban centres, this partnership is designed to position Kaohsiung as a premier destination in its own right. The city's mix of cultural heritage, modern attractions, and event programming provides a solid foundation for the joint marketing push.
