APT Travel Group marked a significant milestone for European river cruising with the official christening of the APT Ostara in Vienna. The vessel, which has been sailing since June 2025, was celebrated in a ceremony that underscored the operator's commitment to blending tradition with contemporary luxury.
A Family Affair on the Danube
Held on the ship's Sun Deck, the event brought together executives, travel partners, and media against the backdrop of Austria's capital. Family Principal and Director Lou Tandy addressed the gathering, reflecting on the symbolism of the moment. Tandy's daughter served as Godmother, breaking the traditional champagne bottle against the hull—a gesture that bridged generations for a company approaching its centenary.
“This ship represents both continuity and evolution,” Tandy said during the ceremony. “We honor our past while designing for the next generation of travelers.” The evening continued with a gala dinner and entertainment, reinforcing APT's focus on experiential luxury.
Design and Onboard Experience
With a capacity of just 154 guests, the Ostara is intentionally intimate, echoing the refined atmosphere of its sister ship, APT Solara. Interiors by Melbourne-based Hecker Guthrie Studio create a floating boutique hotel feel, emphasizing understated sophistication. Key features include expansive Balcony and Owner's Suites, the Grüner Bar & Dining—which rises hydraulically to offer 360-degree views—and six dining venues plus in-suite dining, serving regionally inspired cuisine that changes with the seasons.
The design philosophy is thoughtful and design-led, ensuring every detail enhances the journey without overwhelming it. This approach aligns with broader trends in quiet luxury in hospitality design, where personal and place-based experiences take precedence.
Strategic Vision for Growth
CEO David Cox described the Ostara and Solara as reflections of nearly 100 years of expertise combined with a clear commitment to innovation. “These ships are not just additions to the fleet—they’re a statement of intent,” Cox said. For luxury travelers, this means more immersive itineraries, elevated onboard experiences, and a continued focus on personalized service.
The christening comes as the river cruise sector sees renewed investment in premium assets. APT's move positions it alongside other operators expanding their fleets, such as Uniworld's recent expansion plans. The Ostara offers itineraries that explore Europe's waterways with a slower, more intimate pace, appealing to discerning clients seeking refined travel.
For travel professionals, the Ostara represents a product that balances heritage with modern luxury—a compelling option for clients who value design, service, and authenticity. As APT continues to evolve, the ship serves as a benchmark for what contemporary river cruising can achieve.
