Hapag-Lloyd Cruises is expanding its cultural programming with the ART 2 SEA 2027 collection, a series of three themed voyages aboard the EUROPA 2 that position the ship as a floating gallery and salon for contemporary art. For travel professionals catering to high-net-worth clients who seek more than standard shore excursions, this programme offers a model of how luxury cruising can integrate deep cultural access with the intimacy of a small-ship experience.

A ship designed as a gallery

The EUROPA 2 already carries approximately 890 original artworks throughout its public spaces and suites, giving it the feel of a contemporary museum at sea. With a guest capacity of just 500, the vessel allows for personalised interactions that larger ships cannot replicate. The ART 2 SEA voyages build on this foundation by adding curated programmes led by gallerists, collectors, and art historians, including vernissages, artist talks, and exhibitions tailored to each sailing.

“This is not about passive observation,” said a Hapag-Lloyd Cruises spokesperson. “Guests are invited to step behind the scenes—meet artists, visit private collections, and understand the cultural context in which art is created.”

Three itineraries, three cultural lenses

The Indo-Pacific journey explores the intersection of tradition and contemporary art across Southeast Asia and Australia. Guests will visit galleries in Java and Bali, experience Indigenous art in Western Australia, and enter the studios of emerging regional artists. The Tokyo to Hong Kong voyage focuses on the dynamic between Japanese and Chinese art, with stops at Beijing’s 798 Art Zone and exclusive studio access. In the Mediterranean, the itinerary takes a classic European turn along the Côte d’Azur and Menorca, including a rare visit to artist Minjung Kim’s Provençal retreat.

These itineraries are designed for travellers who value substance alongside style—a demographic that luxury cruise lines are increasingly targeting. Similar trends are visible in other sectors, such as Oceania Cruises' 2026 Caribbean season, which also prioritises culture and cuisine.

Luxury reimagined with culture

The EUROPA 2 itself reinforces the concept of “laid-back luxury” with spacious veranda suites, seven gourmet restaurants, and a contemporary, uncluttered design. The ship’s atmosphere encourages informal exchanges that feel more like a private art circle than a structured programme. For travel advisors, this represents a clear selling point: the experience is exclusive without being stiff, and culturally enriching without feeling academic.

The ART 2 SEA programme also aligns with broader industry moves toward experiential travel. As Silversea and PerryGolf have shown, niche interests can drive significant booking demand when paired with luxury cruising. Similarly, Ponant's icebreaker Le Commandant Charcot has opened new seasonal itineraries in Greenland, proving that specialised programming attracts repeat luxury travellers.

With limited departures and highly curated experiences, the ART 2 SEA 2027 voyages are designed for clients who plan ahead and seek something beyond the ordinary. Travel professionals should note that these itineraries offer a rare combination of small-ship intimacy, world-class art access, and the relaxed luxury that the EUROPA 2 brand is known for.
