Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, has launched Venture Realm, a mixed reality attraction that blends live African penguins with prehistoric dinosaurs. The experience, powered by augmented reality developer AStation, opened on June 11 within the aquarium's Penguin Pavilion.

Venture Realm represents a world first: a live animal exhibit enhanced with mixed reality entertainment at an outdoor scale. Guests wear Apple Vision Pro headsets and walk freely through the pavilion, where digital Tyrannosaurus rex and flying pterodactyls appear alongside the real penguin colony. The prehistoric setting includes erupting volcanoes and meteor showers, while the penguins remain undisturbed.

Technology Behind the Attraction

AStation's patented Enterverse platform is the only mixed reality system capable of operating at that scale outdoors, according to the company. It uses geo-sensing to map the environment and layer digital content seamlessly onto the real world. The system requires no tethers, allowing guests to move naturally through the space.

AStation chief technical officer Sion Yang said: "Ripley's has spent over a century finding things that seem impossible and putting them in front of people. That spirit made them the perfect partner for technology that most people have to see to believe. We are honoured they trusted us with their stage."

Ripley's Believe It or Not! World Entertainment regional operations manager Pablo Chavez added: "AStation's Enterverse technology is far beyond anything we've seen in the attractions industry. At this time, Ripley's is the only place it can be experienced in North America."

The attraction is located in the Penguin Pavilion, an expansive outdoor area that houses African penguins. AStation's platform is designed to operate in such environments, where traditional augmented reality systems struggle with lighting and scale.

For travel industry professionals, Venture Realm signals a new direction for attractions: mixed reality as a differentiator for destination properties. Similar technology could be applied to cruise ship entertainment, hotel lobbies, or MICE venues, as seen in recent hospitality innovations like Marriott International's joint venture with Leali Family to expand the Lefay luxury wellness brand, which also focuses on immersive guest experiences.

The partnership between Ripley's and AStation highlights how attractions can leverage technology to create unique, shareable experiences without altering physical infrastructure. For tour operators and travel agents, this adds a compelling reason to recommend Gatlinburg as a destination, particularly for families and tech-savvy travelers.

Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies is part of the Ripley's Believe It or Not! chain, which operates over 100 attractions worldwide. The company has a history of blending entertainment with the unexpected, from oddities museums to aquariums. Venture Realm extends that tradition into the digital realm.

AStation, based in South Korea, specializes in mixed reality solutions for entertainment and education. Its Enterverse platform has been deployed in other venues, but the Ripley's installation is its largest outdoor deployment to date. The company plans to expand into other markets, including potential applications in theme parks and museums.

For the travel industry, Venture Realm demonstrates how mixed reality can enhance existing attractions without major capital expenditure. It also opens possibilities for seasonal or rotating content, allowing venues to refresh experiences without rebuilding. As the technology matures, similar installations could appear in hotels, cruise ships, and convention centers, offering new revenue streams and guest engagement tools.
