The seventh Sands Shopping Carnival wrapped up at Cotai Expo in Macao, drawing nearly 160,000 visits despite adverse weather. Organised by Sands China Ltd, the four-day event, held from 23 to 26 July, reinforced the company's commitment to local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and community inclusion, featuring more than 580 exhibition booths and participation from 20 social service organisations.

Since its debut in 2020, the carnival has grown into Macao's largest consumer event, with cumulative visitation now exceeding 800,000. This year's edition included a Greater Bay Area Karaoke King Singing Competition, where visually impaired pianist Chan Ka Keong performed, underscoring the event's inclusive mission.

Platform for SMEs and social enterprises

Dr Wilfred Wong, executive vice chairman of Sands China Ltd, highlighted the carnival's role in uniting retailers, SMEs, and social service organisations. "Over the past seven years, we have worked hand in hand with local social service organisations, with participation growing year by year," he said. The event has also provided hands-on learning opportunities for over 1,000 service users.

The carnival featured eight themed zones, including Household Products, Gourmet and Wine, and Cultural and Creative. It offered individuals with special educational needs the chance to sell handmade products, gaining work experience and confidence. Chan Chi Neng, manager of the Noah Youth Growth and Development Centre, praised the event for helping young rehabilitated individuals demonstrate their value to the community.

The 2026 Sands Shopping Carnival was co-organised by the Macao Chamber of Commerce and supported by various local government bodies and sponsors. Sands China plans to continue leveraging the carnival to contribute to Macao's prosperity and inclusiveness.

For travel professionals, the carnival exemplifies how integrated resorts can drive local economic impact and community engagement, a model increasingly relevant for destination marketing and MICE programming. Similar initiatives, such as Hang Lung's summer carnival, show the broader trend of retail-led events boosting foot traffic across Chinese cities.

Macao's tourism recovery has been bolstered by such events, which attract both residents and visitors. The carnival's success also aligns with Sands China's broader corporate social responsibility efforts, including its support for local cultural and educational programs.

As the travel industry continues to evolve, events like the Sands Shopping Carnival offer a blueprint for integrating community inclusion into commercial activities, a strategy that resonates with modern travellers seeking authentic experiences.
