MEETINGS 2026, New Zealand's flagship business events trade show, has set a new record with NZ$170 million (US$100 million) in projected bookings, a 55% jump from the previous year. Held at the New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC) in Auckland in June, the event attracted 1,600 attendees, including more than 700 qualified buyers and over 260 exhibitors representing 19 regions.

The strong results underscore the resilience of the MICE sector in the Asia-Pacific, even as global economic headwinds persist. Business Events Industry Aotearoa (BEIA) Chief Executive Lisa Hopkins attributed the growth to heightened demand from both domestic and international buyers seeking to hold events in New Zealand. “This reinforces the positive momentum which is being felt across the sector, with strong interest from both domestic and international buyers to hold business events in New Zealand,” she said.

Rising booking values drive growth

While the percentage of buyers confirming business remained similar to last year, the average value of projected bookings rose significantly, according to survey data collected from hosted and day buyers and independently verified. The number of buyers increased by 20%, contributing to the overall surge in projected turnover.

Hopkins emphasised the importance of MEETINGS as a key trade event connecting the industry with decision-makers. “The strong satisfaction scores from exhibitors and visitors show the quality of the connections taking place and the importance of MEETINGS for building new partnerships and future events,” she added.

The record performance comes as other MICE hubs in the region also report strong numbers. For instance, Singapore's MICE sector hit a $2.3 billion record earlier this year, indicating a broader recovery in business events across Asia-Pacific.

New Zealand's appeal as a destination for incentive travel and corporate meetings remains strong, with its unique landscapes and proven event infrastructure. The NZICC, which opened in 2023, has become a central venue for large-scale conferences and exhibitions.

Looking ahead, the 30th MEETINGS will return to the same venue in Auckland on 29–30 June 2027, marking a significant milestone for an event that has contributed substantially to New Zealand's economy over the past three decades.

For travel professionals, the results signal continued confidence in the MICE segment, particularly in the Southern Hemisphere. As Goa gears up for a record charter season and other destinations expand their business events offerings, competition for international meeting planners is intensifying.

BEIA's data also highlighted the growing importance of hosted buyer programmes, which have become a staple of trade events worldwide. The M&I hosted buyer calendar for 2027 reflects this trend, promising no-repeat meetings to maximise networking efficiency.

With the success of MEETINGS 2026, New Zealand is well-positioned to maintain its status as a leading business events destination in the Asia-Pacific region.
